When outside air is exchanged with your homes inside air, it’s normally a welcome part of your home’s operation. However, when outside air quality is poor, like the wildfire smoke, that exchange may be concerning for you and your home.
Keep air filters in forced-air HVAC systems fresh by changing them or washing them regularly. One-inch filters can be changed as often as monthly where larger, 4” media filters are designed to last between 6 – 12 months. Media filters are designed with more surface area to allow for a higher Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating to keep air flowing properly to the HVAC system. The higher the MERV rating, the better a filter is at removing particulates. We strongly encourage avoiding one-inch filters touting a MERV rating any higher than 8. The lack of surface area and density of the filter is too obstructive and can be damaging to the HVAC system.
Next, make sure return grille(s) are free from obstruction so air can move freely back over the freshly changed or cleaned air filter.
Lastly, turn the HVAC system’s fan to the ‘On’ position. The constant airflow will move more air back through the filter. Newer systems with variable-speed fans are designed to run this way while a system with a single-speed fan will utilize more electricity but would provide additional filtration. The air filter’s useful life would be decreased due to the additional air moving across the filter and the higher number of particulates in the air.
Sealing any gaps and cracks specifically around doors and windows will help alleviate unwanted air infiltration. Otherwise, it’s best to keep your windows and doors closed while staying inside when our outdoor air quality is poor.
