Keep Pipes from Freezing during Extreme Cold
Helpful tips to keep you away from a plumbing disaster

Prevention

  • Windows and doors should remain closed – even garage doors
    • Seal and insulate air gaps around them
  • Know where your main water shut-off valve is located and how it works
  • Keep your thermostat on and set it to a comfortable yet reasonable temperature
o Don’t set your thermostat back at night, keep it set to a constant temperature
  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses
  • Insulate pipes that may be exposed to cold air
  • Open cabinet doors below sinks to circulate warm air around pipes
  • Allow a slow drip to faucets that may be susceptible to freezing
  • Make sure the lid on your water meter pit is tightly secured
o If your water meter is in the basement, ensure the area remains above freezing

What to Do if You Identify a Frozen Pipe

  • Turn off the water at the shut-off valve and/or the main shut-off valve
  • Open the faucet attached to the frozen pipe to allow water to flow through and relieve any pressure
o Running water through the pipe will also help melt any remaining ice
  • Apply gradual heat by wrapping the pipe in bath towels, a hair dryer, or a space heater to heat the area where the pipe is located. Keep applying heat until the water pressure is restored
o Never apply direct heat or an open flame to the affected area
  • If a pipe is bulging or you can’t find the location of the blockage, call a licensed plumber
  • Properly dry and repair any water damage. This will help prevent any potential problems with mold.
  • Call your insurance professional as soon as possible. They will help you understand what’s covered by your policy and familiarize yourself with the claims filing process.

During extreme cold, have a backup heat source ready:

  • Ensure fireplaces, wood stoves, and electric heaters are working properly.
  • Electric heaters should only be plugged directly into the electrical outlet:

Do not use extension cords to plug in portable electric heaters

and

Only operate portable electric heaters when you are home
